"How to Choose Your Bestselling Title"

Imagine the mere mention of your book's title spurring people to ask, "Where can I get your book?"

Better yet, what if when someone hears your book title on the radio or podcast, or sees it listed on Amazon, or notices the book spine on a bookstore shelf---what if then they wanted to buy more than one copy?

It is possible.

In fact, it happened back in the 1920s and '30s. A man named E. Haldeman-Julius sold 200 million copies of his "Little Blue Books"—by title alone!

Even more--he analyzed in detail which titles sold and which didn't, and uncovered some of the "magic words" that make people buy.

What were those magic words?

See if any of these sound familiar:

  • "How to ..."
  • "The Truth about ..."
  • "The Story of  ..."
  • "Love"
  • "Life"
  • "What You Should Know ab out ..."
  • "The Art of ..."
  • "The Secret to ..."

I will be revealing many more "magic words"--some of which will surprise you--and explain why they work, in an upcoming 5-module teleclass ... and I hope you can attend!

Publishing Insider's Guide #1:

"How to Choose Your Bestselling Title"

5-Module TeleCourse

"My coauthor Jerry Willis and I listened to Diane's first teleseminar on choosing a title, and got to work right away taking her advice. After surveying many people and getting 80 responses, one title came out a clear winner. Deciding on a title first is helping us focus on making sure we write a book that delivers on our promise, and saving us lots of time. We've even started a blog, using our chosen title, and are getting questions from people interested in the book as it develops. Listen to Diane's advice; it works!"

--Suzanne Lieurance,The Working Writer's Coach  ghostwriter for the upcoming, The Life of Your Dreams - Building Your Live and Career Around the Things You Love Most by Jerry W. Willis

My training as a copywriter has taught me the importance of a headline to any form of copy. Just like a headline, a book's title and subtitle must do a lot of work.

First, they have to grab attention. Studies show people make decisions to stop and read or move on in 4 seconds or less! In today's media-saturated world, your window of time to capture attention is dwindling rapidly.

Not only does it have to grab attention, it needs to promise a benefit or pique curiosity enough to make people want to know more.

In fact, I think a book's title needs to work even harder than a headline. Besides sparking interest, your title has to accurately represent the book, and be memorable enough to create the "buzz" or word of mouth so crucial to a book's success.

Ideally, what you want is a title that makes a promise so irresistible that it sells the book. If you have that, you can sell your book--in a matter of seconds, really. As long as it takes for someone to read your title and want the book.

Sadly, even many publishers don't have a clue as to how to title a book so it will sell. I've paticipated in enough titling meetings as an editor to know that rarely do publishers take the time to do any research. I do believe they can tell a great title when they hear it, but coming up with one is a combination of art and science that takes time to hone.

It's a skill that's worth developing. And I want to help you develop it, so that whether you self-publish or work with a traditional publisher, your title will stand out above all other books on your topic.

Which will, of course, sell your book. It may even get you on a best-seller list (though that would be a factor of many other efforts as well).

How would it feel to see your name on the best-seller list? What would it do for your business to be interviewed on radio, even television, because your book has created so much buzz?

My 5-module TeleCourse, "How to Choose Your Best-Selling Title," will guide you step-by-step through the process of choosing the best possible title for your book.  A title that will make people want to buy the book as soon as they hear it. Or book you for a speech A title that creates buzz, word of mouth--among people and the media.

An irresistible title that sells your book in 4 seconds or less.

I want you to create the kind of title that makes publishers want to publish your book--perhaps even paying you a handsome advance to do so.

The system I will teach you doesn't only work for book titles, either, though that will be the focus. Once you learn the process of coming up with an irresistible offer in your title, you can use it for any information product (ebook, teleseminar series, home-study course, etc.). You can also apply the process to your marketing materials—such as press releases, articles, sales copy.

Here's what you will learn in each module ...

Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to ask questions. Anything not answered in the course material will be covered in this special Q&A.

You will be able to submit your current title ideas, and at the end of each module's teleclass there will be time to evaluate and improve upon your title.

Your Fellow Students Will Also Help You ...

I will be starting a special group, available only to those in the course, for your own networking with other students. You will be able to submit your title/subtitle ideas and get the input not just from me, but from fellow students.

As your fellow students get educated together, their input will become more valuable.

This group will also be a great way for you to get the word out about yourself and your product, and perhaps even end up with some partnerships.

"How to Choose Your Best-Selling Title" begins on Wednesday, October 3, and will continue each Wednesday through October. (October will be the month you start your book!) The class will be held at 9 a.m. Pacific, 11 a.m. Central, 12 noon Eastern. Each module will be one to two hours in length. You will receive Study Guides and other materials before each class.

Don't worry if you can't attend the live class. You will be able to listen to the recording at your convenience.

You will also be able to ask questions via email before, as well as during the webcast of the class itself. And you will be able to access all the materials I make available to students.

Personalized Coaching for a Fraction of the Cost ...

At this point you may be wondering, "How much will all this cost?"

Answer: Less than you'd think.

People pay me $175 and up to coach them for one hour. You will be getting more than 5 hours of coaching, including personal analysis of your title and subtitle. During the course, you will have access to me via email as well.

Then there are the special resources I will make available to my students.

Resource #1: Copy of The First Hundred Million

This is the landmark study that legendary copywriter Gary Halbert credits as the source of the "magic words" that made his copy sell literally millions of dollars of goods. The study itself is, however, geared toward books and book titles that sell.

E. Haldeman-Julius sold 100 million copies of "little blue books" by title alone, back in the late 1920s, and then wrote a book dissecting in detail how he did so. (He went on to sell another 100 million books, by the way.)

Especially fascinating is the chapter on "the Hospital"--the place where he "doctored" titles to give them new life. In some cases, he ended up selling three times as many when he changed the title! (And we're talking going from 10,000 to 30,000, not 5000 to 15,000.) You'll discover the "magic words" that make books sell from what Haldeman-Julius learned from his experiment with "the Hospital."

He also uncovered hard evidence on what kinds of books Americans like to read. Guess what? Things haven't changed much in the last 80 years--as you'll discover when you receive this fascinating study.

As Gary Halbert said, "Nothing like it has ever been written." You'll discover dozens of effective but often overlooked title ideas. Plus, you will gather an insight into the hearts and desires of the American buying public. You will see whether starting your title/headline with "How To" or "The Art Of' or "The Truth About" are sure winners or not.

This 155-page digital book sells for $37 and up online ... you will get it for free as a student. (More info here.)

Resource #2: "Swipe File" and Title Templates

Part of what I want to teach you is how to build your own swipe file and title templates, but you will, at the appropriate time, also receive this "swipe file" that I put together based on my own exhaustive study.

You can turn to these templates, plus your own, over and over again for all your copy needs.

Here's another idea: It's possible that by the time you're finished with the course, you could have your own "swipe file" of great titles in your niche you coud possibly even sell!

Resource #3: Added Teleclass on Using Search Engine Tools to Find Your Keywords

Imagine waking up and finding out that 10 people have bought your book while you were sleeping.

That's quite possible in today's plugged-in world. Because of the Internet, readers can come to you.

If, that is, you understand how to attract them.

One key way is through keywords. Your title and/or subtitle should contain good keywords. Keywords that people are actually searching for.

This bonus class will show you tools nobody is talking about that enable you to find your best keywords and use them in your title and web copy. The Internet gurus will probably be angry with me about this, but too bad. You deserve to know about these tools--and they're free!
